"i'm new to being a leftist, where do i start?"
first of all, welcome!! we're glad you decided to learn about leftism.
first things first, it's important to understand what leftists stand for, and what makes leftism different from other left-wing ideologies, namely liberalism.
LEFTISM VS. LIBERALISM
leftism:
anti-capitalist
far left
mostly anti-gun control
anti-impearlist
for abolition, not reform
liberalism:
capitalist
more center
pro-gun control
benefits from imperialism
for reform, not abolition
there are many other differences between leftists and liberals, but the main difference is their stances on capitalism. leftists are anti-capitalists and most often communists. leftists believe that capitalism and white supremacy are the root of all social issues, namely poverty, systemic racism and imperialism, and that capitalism must be abolished rather than reformed, because there is nothing to reform. capitalism is working exactly as intended. and this must be done away with.

"when i give food to the poor,
they call me a saint.
when i ask why they are poor,
they call me a communist."
- brazillian catholic archbishop helder camara
next, you should think about theory and praxis.
theory is, well, theory. it's ideas and explanations. you may hear leftists talking about "reading theory." these are books written by famous leftists.
theory recommendations for new
leftists
"freedom is a constant struggle" by angela davis
"women race and class" by angela davis
"the conquest of bread" by peter kropotkin
"capitalist realism" by mark fisher
praxis is acting, what you do in real life that aligns with your ideals. for example, organizing food or clothing drives for poor neighborhoods. or, donating to mutual aid funds (see our section on mutual aid if you would like to donate!)
isreal vs. palestine
what's it all about?

for clarity, israel vs. palestine is not a religious conflict. in fact, it's not a 'conflict' at all. it is the israeli government segreating, bombing, evicting, and ethnically cleansing palestinians on their own land.
israel and palestine are not 'fighting'. simply, israel is the oppressor & palestinians are the oppressed. israel is not a country, they are settelers colonizing the native state of palestine.

| BASIC OVERVIEW israel is a settler colony seeking the ethnic cleansing, or genocide, of palestinians. they do this through violently evicting palestinian families from their homes and replacing these neighborhoods with israelis, bombing mosques, shooting children, bombing homes, and more. they are responsible for the displacement of over 7.2 million palestinians refugees. |
| HISTORY before israeli settlement, arabs, jewish people, muslims, and christians lived peacefully in palestine together. however, zionist colonization began with the intent of establishing a jewish ethnostate, with palestinians as an obstecle to eliminate. they first began to move into palestine in the late 1800s, however the most zionists moved to palestine from 1917-1947. the genocide began in the 1930s. |
